What Are Your Options For A Patio Awning?

Posted on: 4 October 2021

A patio awning can make your patio much more versatile. You'll be able to sit on your patio even if it's raining. And on really sunny days, you won't be as likely to get overheated or sunburned. As you start to shop for patio awnings, though, there is something you'll soon realize: you have a lot of options you'll need to choose from. Here's a look at some of the most common, optimal types of patio awnings available.

Wall-Mounted Awnings

If you're looking for a more permanent option, you will want to focus on wall-mounted awnings. These awnings are attached to the side of your home. They are often made from metal, such as aluminum or stainless steel. However, there are some that are made from wood, too. An advantage of wall-mounted awnings is that you never need to take them down, store them, or really do anything with them at all other than power wash them every now and then. However, they do dramatically change the look of your patio and yard as a permanent structure, and they do tend to be one of the more expensive options on this list.

Fold-Up Awnings

Fold-up awnings are a type of retractable awning. Usually, you retract the awning by turning a hand crank. This causes the awning to fold up against the house. Turn the hand crank the opposite way, and the awning will extend out over your patio. Fold-up awnings tend to be quite affordable. However, they can be prone to damage, even when folded up. High winds can catch them and tear them off the home, which means they're not a great choice in areas where harsh storms are common. Most fold-up awnings are also intended for smaller patios. A larger awning is harder to fold up in a compact way.

Roll-Up Awnings

Another type of retractable awning is a roll-up awning. This type of awning rolls up into a cylinder, which is often housed inside a metal or plastic casing. Roll-up awnings are often installed with remote controls, which means you can extend or retract the awning with the touch of a button. These awnings are often made from vinyl. They're not very durable or hardy when extended, but the casing that they roll up inside of keeps them pretty safe when retracted.
