The Pros And Cons Of Keyless Systems

Posted on: 17 March 2016

The most common key system for the average home is the traditional lock and key. However, this is not always the best option, especially depending on how worried you are of losing your key and how many will need access to your home. Another option is the keyless system, which has several pros and cons.

You No Longer Have To Worry About Losing Your Key

A keyless lock eliminates the need to carry around a key. Therefore, you do not have to worry about losing your key and having to rely on a spare given to a neighbor. Also, a lost set of keys can lead to your home being burglarized. However, if you do not work hard to memorize the keypad code, you might then find yourself locked out of your home. However, since you can choose your own code, you can select something that is easier to remember.

When choosing a code you believe you can remember, make sure that you do not choose something that is easy for an outsider to guess. For example, you shouldn't use a birthday, address or phone number. Instead, use a code that you're likely to be the only person to know. For example, it could be an important date that isn't well-known to others.

Overall Security

Keyless locks provide better security because many of the traditional methods that are used to pick a lock are not available. When you need to change the keycode, this is much less expensive than changing a cylinder on the lock if you need to use a different key. However, burglars are able to hack keyless doors if they have the technical capabilities. There are very inexpensive hacking tools that are capable of hacking all but the most expensive keyless doors.

Notification Systems

More advanced keyless locks can send notifications to the police if there are multiple failed attempts at opening the door. However, the more advanced keyless locks are also more difficult and expensive to install. You may need to pay for regular service charges.

Battery Backup

If there is a power shortage, you might be locked out of your home. However, you can install a battery backup system.

Remote Systems

Besides keycodes, some keys rely on a remote. This can increase the convenience of the door by allowing you to unlock it at a distance. However, the remote also increases the risk that someone will gain unauthorized access to your home if you lose your remote.

No Need For Multiple Keys

If you need multiple keys, it is much more convenient if you have a key code. You can simply tell whomever needs access the keycode number and you can have the code changed later. Contact a company like Bob's Lock & Key for more information.
